Inherited from Old Belarusian быти (byti), from Old East Slavic бꙑти (byti), from Proto-Slavic *byti, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *bū́ˀtei, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰuH-. Cognates include Ukrainian бути (buty), Russian быть (bytʹ), Polish być.

Usage notes
- Omitted in the present tense except in the third-person singular "ёсць", which is used occasionally to express possession or definition or for emphasis.
- To express A=B (to indicate that the subject and object are the same), in the present tense, the verb is omitted and — can be used, e.g.:
- мой брат — наста́ўнік ― moj brat — nastáŭnik ― my brother is a teacher
- "—" is not used when the subject is a pronoun, e.g.:
- Omitted in the present tense to indicate that the subject plays the role of the predicate nominal
- However, the dash is not written in third person impersonal adverbial phrases.
- Other verbs such as быва́ць (byvácʹ) and стаць (stacʹ) can also be used instead.
