брегалище

Bulgarian

Etymology

Formally reflecting an earlier *bergališče, from the same origin as Брега́лница (Bregálnica, Bregalnica) (hydronym). Either derived from Proto-Slavic *bergъ (coast, bank) or possibly of Paleo-Balkan origin akin to Thracian Βέργα (Vérga), Dacian Bregedáva. Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *bʰergʰ- (to protect, to fortify, to tower).
