Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Slavic *boraviti, of disputed origin. Limited to South Slavic.

  • Per BER, possibly akin to бо́ря (bórja, to wrestle) + -авя (-avja).
  • Per Miklošič, from a hypothetical *bvor-, cognate with the copula *byti (to be).
