Inherited from Old East Slavic березовꙑи (berezovyi), from Proto-Slavic *berzovъ. By surface analysis, бере́з- (beréz-, birch) + овий (ovyj). Cognate with Russian берёзовый (berjózovyj), Belarusian бяро́завы (bjarózavy), Polish brzozowy, Slovak brezový, Czech březový, etc.
