From earlier *ballïs < *baldïs < *baltïz, from Proto-Turkic *bāldïŕ. Cognate with Turkish baldız (“sister of one's wife”), Uzbek boldiz (“sister of one’s wife”), Karakhanid [script needed] (baldïz, “younger sister of one's wife”), Old Uyghur [script needed] (baltïz, “younger sister”).
