Etymology

From Proto-Mordvinic *aməľəms, inherited from Proto-Finno-Ugric *ama- (“to scoop”). Cognate with Finnish amme (“bathtub”), ammen (“scoop”), ammentaa (“to scoop”), Eastern Mansi [script needed] (ūmp).
