Borrowed from Ottoman Turkish لاجه (“colorful”) (whence modern Turkish alaca). Akin to Macedonian ала (ala, “serpent, dragon”), Serbo-Croatian а̏ла (“spotted; dragon”) (borrowed from Ottoman Turkish).
