From Proto-Turkic *ak-, Proto-Turkic *iak- (“to flow”). Cognate with Kazakh ағу (ağu), Kyrgyz агуу (aguu), Kumyk акъмакъ (aqmaq), Azerbaijani axmaq, Turkish akmak, Shor ағарға, Uzbek oqmoq, etc.
