- From Proto-Mongolic *ab-, compare Buryat абаха (abaxa), Kalmyk авх (avx), East Yugur ab.
- Tentatively connected with Khitan [Khitan Small needed] (aû), a hapax legomenon, by Yingzhe and Janhunen.[1]
