аван

Chuvash

Etymology

Uncertain however there are a few theories:

  1. According to Yegorov borrowed from Persian آبادان (âbâdân), compare Uyghur [script needed] (obdan, good).[1]
  2. According to Fedotov borrowed from Arabic أَمَان (ʔamān, safety, peace).[2]
  3. Yegorov and Fedotov also suggests it may be derived from Proto-Turkic *ab-, the root of *abïn- (to console oneself) and *abït- (to console).[1][2]
  4. EDAL accepts Turkish evet as a cognate and reconstructs a hypothetical Proto-Turkic *ebe-,[3] however such a root is unattested and is not reconstructed outside of EDAL.
