Пхеньян
Russian
Etymology
- Based on the Kontsevich Cyrillization system of Korean Пхёнъян (Pxjonʺjan) of Korean 평양(平壤) (Pyeong'yang, “flat land”).
- It is very uncommon for the letter ё to appear in an unstressed positions and letter ъ mostly appears in native Slavic words to separate prefixes, so Пхёнъян (Pxjonʺjan) was Russified to Пхенья́н (Pxenʹján).
