From Ancient Greek Καύκασος (Kaúkasos), ultimately of Iranian origin.

Was already attested in Old East Slavic as Кавкасийскыѣ горы, a calque of Καυκάσια ὄρη, however according to Vasmer and Trubachyov the current form Кавказ stems from French Caucase and German Kaukasus.
