From вели́к (velík, great) + ден (den, day), a calque of Ancient Greek μεγάλη ἡμέρα (megálē hēméra, great day). Cognate to Macedonian Велигден (Veligden), Serbo-Croatian Вeликдан, Belarusian Вялі́кдзень (Vjalíkdzjenʹ), and Ukrainian Вели́кдень (Velýkdenʹ).
