From вели́к (velík, “great”) + ден (den, “day”), a calque of Ancient Greek μεγάλη ἡμέρα (megálē hēméra, “great day”). Cognate to Macedonian Велигден (Veligden), Serbo-Croatian Вeликдан, Belarusian Вялі́кдзень (Vjalíkdzjenʹ), and Ukrainian Вели́кдень (Velýkdenʹ).
