χάννη

Ancient Greek

Alternative forms

  • χᾰ́ννᾰ (khánna), χᾰ́ννος (khánnos)

Etymology

In view of the characterization by Epicharmus as μεγαλοχάσμων (megalokhásmōn, wide-gaping), connection with χαίνω (khaínō, to yawn, gape) with expressive gemination has been proposed. Thompson considers a foreign derivation from Egyptian [script needed] (chnā, unknown kind of fish), while Furnée suggests a Pre-Greek origin comparing this word with χέννιον (khénnion, kind of fish), showing alternation α/ε.
