Etymology

Learned borrowing from French phthore (an obsolete early synonym of fluor) derived drom Ancient Greek φθορά (phthorá, deterioration) on account of the corrosive nature of hydrofluoric acid. Russian фтор (ftor) is also from the same root, in contrast to most European languages which use derivatives of fluor.
