τίτυρος

Ancient Greek

Etymology

Furnée compares διθύραμβος (dithúrambos, dithyramb), which would contain a variant ot this word, with a suffix -αμβος. Previous proposals include connection with synonymous σάτυρος (sáturos, satyr), from Proto-Indo-European *tewh₂- (to swell) by Solmsen. This is rejected by Nehring, who considers both words to be loans from Asia Minor. Deroy connects the suffix -τυρος with ταῦρος (taûros, bull). According to Beekes, the word is Pre-Greek.
