τέτριξ
Ancient Greek
Etymology
Probably onomatopoeic. Similar bird names are Lithuanian tetervà (“grey hen”), Proto-Slavic *tetervь (“black grouse”), Proto-Iranian *tatr̥wáh (“pheasant”) and Sanskrit तित्तिर (tittira, “partridge”). From the same onomatopoeic root are τετράων (tetráōn), τέτραξ (tétrax), τατύρας (tatúras), τέταρος (tétaros) and τετράζω (tetrázō).
