Etymology

Unknown. Traditionally believed to be a substantivazion of the adjective σχέδιος (skhédios, near, close). Alternatively, a collective abstract formation in -ία (-ía) from σχεδόν (skhedón, near; approximatively, roughly), with original meaning "unprepared formation, improvisation". However, the semantics are not convincing.
