Etymology
Only attested as a gloss in Hesychius. From σφήξ (sphḗx, “wasp”) + -ισμός (-ismós, “suffix forming abstract nouns”), as if from a verb σφηκίζω (sphēkízō, “to buzz like a wasp”).
