πύξος
Ancient Greek
Etymology
Probably a substrate loanword from Italy, related to Latin buxus (“box tree”). Attempts by Scardigli, who looks for the origin of the term in Asia Minor, and by Carnoy, who connects it to Proto-Indo-European *bʰewgʰ- (“to bend”), are unconvincing.
