πιτσούνι

Greek

Etymology

Borrowed from Italian piccion(e) (as a dish) + ending (-i). The change [o] > [u]

  • either from a closed pronunciation of [o] the Italian word, or from southern dialect pic(c)iuni which was perceived as singular noun [1]
  • or, because of the presence of [n],[1] or influenced by older nouns ending in -ούνι like πιγούνι n (pigoúni, chin), κουδούνι n (koudoúni, bell).[2]

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /piˈt͡su.ni/
  • Hyphenation: πι‧τσού‧νι
