From Proto-Indo-European *bʰendʰ- (to tie; bond, band) and formally almost completely agreeing with Lithuanian beñdras (common, shared). Compare also Sanskrit बन्धु (bandhu, relative, kindred). The oxytone accentuation of this word is after ἑκυρός (hekurós, father-in-law).
