Etymology
From Romanian măgură (“hill”), an expressive creation based on *măc- or *moc-; possibly from a Balkanic substrate language. Akin to Albanian magulë (“heap”), metathetic form of gamulë. Other less likely theories included Latin macula or *maculum, or a Proto-Slavic *mogyla.
