λέπας

See also: λεπάς

Ancient Greek

Etymology

The similarity with Latin lapis (stone) is hardly accidental; a Mediterranean substrate borrowing is most probable, perhaps through Pre-Greek. Otherwise, from Proto-Indo-European *lep- (to peel) (compare secōsaxum; rumpōrupēs).
