λάγιον

Ancient Greek

Etymology

Unexplained. Furnée compares λήκυθος (lḗkuthos, oil flask, lekythos), but this is uncertain. Kronasser compares Akkadian 𒂁𒆷𒄩𒀭 (DUG.LA.ḪA.AN /laḫannu/, flask, bottle), itself derived from Sumerian 𒂁𒆷𒄩𒀭𒁍𒁕 (dug.la.ḫa.an.gid2.da /laḫangiddû/, beer jug). Perhaps from the same Pre-Greek source of λάγῡνος (lágūnos, flask).
