From Proto-Hellenic *krohnós, from Proto-Indo-European *kros-nós, from *kres- (“spring, fount”); cognate with Proto-Albanian *krāna (> modern Albanian krua). Related to κρήνη (krḗnē, “spring, well, fountain”).
