From an original *τīβωτός (*tībōtós), from Aramaic תֵּיבוֹתָא (tēḇōṯā), from a merger of Egyptian
(ḏbꜣt, “sarcophagus, coffin”) and
(dbt, “chest, box”), as also synonymous Arabic تَابُوت (tābūt) and Hebrew תֵּבָה (tēḇā́).
