κερκίων

Ancient Greek

Etymology

Α suffix -ίων (-íōn) is found in other animal names, like ἀκανθίων (akanthíōn, hedgehog) and πορφυρίων (porphuríōn, swamphen). Frisk derives it from κέρκος (kérkos, tail), because this bird wags its tail.
