κάλπις

Ancient Greek

Alternative forms

Etymology

Without a certain explanation. Often connected with Breton kelorn (bucket) but this does not explain the -α-. Furnée connects it with Ancient Greek κελέβη (kelébē), for which there seems no reason. Possibly from Pre-Greek.
