κάλπις
Ancient Greek
Alternative forms
- κᾰ́λπη (kálpē), κᾰ́λπος (kálpos)
Etymology
Without a certain explanation. Often connected with Breton kelorn (“bucket”) but this does not explain the -α-. Furnée connects it with Ancient Greek κελέβη (kelébē), for which there seems no reason. Possibly from Pre-Greek.
