From Byzantine Greek ζευγάρι (zeugári), ζευγάριν (zeugárin), from ζευγάριον (zeugárion), diminutive of Ancient Greek ζεῦγος (zeûgos). Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *yewg- (“to join, tie together”).
