Etymology

Unknown. Beekes calls connections to δρίος (dríos, thicket), in the sense of "swelling," a "mere guess." Pokorny suggests the latter connection and also compares δριμύς (drimús, piercing, sharp), Proto-Indo-European *der- (to flay, split open).[1]
