βδελυρός

Ancient Greek

Etymology

The word is mostly explained as formed from βδέω (bdéō, to break wind) with a suffix "-λυ-", but this is hardly possible. The derivation of the adjective from βδέω (bdéō) is also not clear semantically. According to Beekes, it is from Pre-Greek.
