Learnedly, from Ancient Greek ἀποβάθρα (apobáthra). απο- (apo-) from ἀπό (apó, from) + βαθρ- + suffix (-a) from the ancient βάθρον n (báthron, pedestal, podium), βα- stem from verb βαίνω (baínō).[1]
