From proper noun Αμφιτρύωνας (Amfitrýonas). Learned borrowing from Ancient Greek Ἀμφιτρύων (Amphitrúōn) from the accusative singurlar "τόν Ἀμφιτρύωνα" from ἀμφί (amphí) & τρύω (trúō, “wear out”). Semantic loan from French amphitryon from the comedy by Molière Amphitryon,[1] as in the verses:[2][3][4]
- le véritable Amphitryon | Est l’Amphitryon où l’on dîne. (Est celui chez qui l’on dîne.) ― The real Amphitryon is | the Amphitryon with whom one dines.
