Formally identical to σικυών (sikuṓn, “cucumber bed”). However, there is no variant form **σεκυ- to complement Σεκυών (Sekuṓn), with the exception of a form σεκούα in Hesychius.

According to Strabo, the original name of the town was Αἰγιαλεῖς (Aigialeîs), followed by Μηκώνη (Mēkṓnē). The native name of the town was Σεκυών (Sekuṓn).
