Etymology

As Koine adjective θεοτόκος (theotókos), substantivised feminine noun < Θεός (Theós, God) + τόκος (tókos, childbirth; offspring) from τίκτω (tíktō, I beget). Sense "Virgin Mary" already by Origen of Alexandria (c. 185 – c. 253).
