Inherited from Proto-Turkic *ȫgsiŕ, equivalent to ʾwyk (ög, “mother”) + -swz (-süz, “-less”). Cognate with Old Turkic 𐰇𐰏𐰾𐰔 (ögsüz), Turkish öksüz, Bashkir үкһеҙ (ükheź), Tuvan өскүс (ösküs).
