From Proto-Mon-Khmer *kaʔ (fish). Earlier *k(ʰ)- was lost in inherited words and early loans, compare ʔɛːk⁷ (guest), ʔaː³ (dry), vaːŋ¹ (wide), ʔɛːp⁷ (narrow), ʔeːŋ⁶ (hand), ʔan¹ (to bite).
