Designed by sinologist Bernhard Karlgren. Based on an extended ⟨ı⟩ (lowercase dotless ⟨i⟩), with a descender (like ⟨q⟩) and a terminal at the top (similar to the one found at the bottom of lowercase ⟨t⟩ or Greek iota ⟨ι⟩). In some fonts the descender is missing and it the letter has a hook top, resembling a reversed fishhook r ⟨ɾ⟩, though the two letters have no etymological connection.
