Borrowed from Ottoman Turkish سطرنج (satranc, “checkered pattern”), from Persian شترنگ (šatrang), from Middle Persian 𐭰𐭠𐭲𐭫𐭠𐭭𐭢 (cʾtlʾng /čatrang/, “chess”), from Sanskrit चतुरङ्ग (caturaṅga, ““four parts” of an army: king, elephants, horses, foot soldiers”).
