Borrowed from Ottoman Turkish سطرنج (satranc, checkered pattern), from Persian شترنگ (šatrang), from Middle Persian 𐭰𐭠𐭲‎𐭫𐭠𐭭𐭢 (cʾt‎lʾng /⁠čatrang⁠/, chess), from Sanskrit चतुरङ्ग (caturaṅga, “four parts” of an army: king, elephants, horses, foot soldiers).
