Etymology

Probably from Arabic حَرارَات‎ (ḥarārāt). The same dissimilation is apparently attested in regional Tunisian Arabic حوارات‎ (ḥwārāt). The Maltese singular thence by backformation. The contemporary plural ħwawar appears to be secondary as it irregularly contains a long vowel followed by a semivowel.
