Etymology

From Arabic زُجاج‎ (zujāj, “glass”), a word with several variants (in Arabic and the Semitic languages at large). The Maltese form presupposes *خُجاج (*ḵujāj). Compare the even more distorted dialectal Arabic form قُزاز‎ (quzāz); furthermore Hebrew זכוכית‎ (zəḵūḵīṯ) alongside זגוגית‎ (zəḡūḡīṯ). Doublet of żġieġ.
