Etymology

Coined by Jan Svatopluk Presl in the 19th century based on Polish czołg (tank) from czołgać się (to creep, to crawl).[1][2]

Usage notes

This term is used only for some genera (e.g. Lissotriton or Triturus) of the family Salamandridae. For other species of newt, the word mlok is used.
