Borrowed from Italian ciao (hello; goodbye), from Venetian ciao (hello; goodbye, literally [I am your] servant), from Medieval Latin sclavus (Slav; slave). Doublet of sklavo and slavo. Colloquial use likely reinforced by German servus (hello; goodbye), which is used similarly.
