Etymology

Inherited from Old Norse ørvendr. The h comes from the mistaken association with the word hönd (hand). Derived from the verb Proto-Germanic *uzwandijaną- attested by Gothic 𐌿𐍃𐍅𐌰𐌽𐌳𐌾𐌰𐌽 (uswandjan, to deviate), Old English āwendan (to turn away, turn the wrong way round), and Old High German irwenten (to turn away, hinder).[1]
