Inherited from Middle French esprevier, which see.

Cognate with Old High German sparwari (whence German Sperber), Middle Dutch sperware (whence Dutch sperwer), Middle Low German sperwere, all meaning “sparrow hawk”. Compare also Italian sparviere and English sparrow hawk.
