From Ottoman Turkish چری, from Proto-Turkic *čērig, from *čēr-. Cognate with Old Turkic [script needed] (čérig, “army”), Azerbaijani çəri, Chuvash ҫар (śar, “army”). Also from Turkic: Mongolian цэрэг (cereg), Hungarian sereg.
