Etymology
From Middle High German ënen, an inflected form of Old High German jēner (“that, yon”), from Proto-Germanic *jainaz (“that over there, yon”). Cognate to German jener, Dutch geen, English yon, Icelandic -inn, Swedish -en, Gothic 𐌾𐌰𐌹𐌽𐍃 (jains).
