Pronunciation

Proper noun

Ósló

  1. (nonstandard or dialectal, Setesdal) alternative form of Oslo

Old Norse

Alternative forms

  • Ásló in West Norwegian sources

Etymology

From older *Ǫ́sló where the ǫ́ is nasalised (whence the -n- in Dutch Ansloo), from Proto-Norse *ᚨᚾᛊᚢᛚᚨᚢᚺᚢ (*ansulauhu), from Proto-Germanic *ansuz (god, deity) + *lauhō f (clearing, meadow). According to Sandnes and Stemshaug, the name has likely been around since before the first century.

Another theory is that the first element comes from áss (hill, beam), from Proto-Germanic *amsaz, but this is unlikely, due to the u-umlauted ǫ́ reflected in Ósló.
