There is considerable controversy in the United States currently over voter rights. Conservatives claim there is a nationwide scandal of huge numbers of people voting illegally -- in particular, impersonating other voters in a way that could be caught by a requiring proof of citizenship to register and vote. Investigators who have looked for evidence of such have found only a tiny handful of cases of voter impersonation.

Paul Weyrich in 2007

By contrast, in 1980, Paul Weyrich, a leading Republican party strategist, famously said:

Perhaps coincidentally, since 1981, the Republican National Committee (RNC) has lost multiple court judgments for fraudulent anti-fraud initiatives that targeted likely Democratic voters. On October 26, 2016, the Democratic National Committee again took the RNC to court over current claims of voter suppression.[1]

The following reforms are suggested in order to attempt to address these issues:

  • Remove proof of citizenship
  • Automatic voter registration
  • Automatic voting audit
  • Same day voter registration
  • Stop 2 tier system (federal and state)
